Band/Guard - 9/18/20

Updated: Oct 13, 2020

Welcome to the Norte Vista Band and Colorguard blog! Here's a space to get caught up on events, announcements, reminders, and more.

Last week was the final week in the 6 week grading period so we students had plenty of work to get caught up with and finish. For the advanced, intermediate, and marching band we played through the rest of our show music. In the jazz band we started to read some new pieces and practice more scales. Students have so far have had plenty of mixed feelings about school and the workload in this virtual environment, but many have also adapted and continue to get better everyday even outside of band and guard.

ICU’s

These are miniature shoutouts to those students who work hard to improve and help others. ICU’s are a way for other students and leaders to recognize them for the effort they put in. Keep up the great work!

The ICU’s for last week went to:

Jonathan Kim - “It's nice to see he's been progressing really well and interacting with others!”

John Micheal - “He has been reaching out and doing a lot to get better ATOP all of his responsibilities”

Micheal Alafa - “Michael has been very kind to everyone he talks to, and really brings up the atmosphere sometimes. I can tell he tries to get better everytime we practice or  rehearse”

Student interview:

We will also be having student interviews! This is a way for parents to understand a students perspective better considering no one really needs any more stress with this pandemic. It's also a way to get to know some of the characters that we have in the band and guard at novi.

John Guerrero, Senior

1. What's your name, grade, and something you do outside of Band?

‘My full name is John Michael George Guerrero, I am a Senior and something I do outside of the band is photography/videography.”

2. How're you liking school this year?

“I am pretty happy with this year since not a lot of things are not happening or have been postponed, so being able to do something extra like band is a nice change of things being pushed back...”

3. What're some differences transitioning from pre-'rona to quarantine?

“Not being able to see friends and meet up, social life(or what little i had) was completely taken away, and those short breaks from seeing family kinda became nonexistent. Don't get me wrong I don't hate my family, it's just when you have been on a school routine for almost 18 years, it's kinda hard breaking it when it's not break or summer.”

4. What motivates you or keeps you going?

“MY DOGGO, must I say more? But seriously, I would say my cousins, family and friends.”

5. Why are you in band/guard?

“Honestly I am in band because a friend back last year pushed me to join in the summer of 2019, and magically I became a member of the pit. I guess in a way they were helping me through sophomore year.”

6. Pineapple on pizza; Yes or no?

"Pineapple on pizza, ewww. I would prefer green peppers with pizza :)"
